I posted before about the Eric Stanton show at Taschen Gallery which was amazing. I kept the focus on his work, but there were other featured artists including Elmer Batters and Gene Bilbrew (whose 1966 “Hypnotize” was on hold for Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran, a hardcore vampire fan. PSST- Nick, I’ll take a bite of you!).
I was really excited to see were the forniphilia sculptures of Allen Jones, of whom I have been a long time admirer. Allen Jones was asked by Stanley Kubrick to design Lucy and the other statues in the Korova Milk Bar scene but he didn’t want to pay him so he refused.
In the end, Kubrick had a set designer do it though the influence is clear.
I took some photos of the pieces which I was thrilled to finally see because when I tried to view them at the Tate Gallery in Liverpool, UK in 2011 they were on tour and I didn’t get to.
They are a sight to behold as no attention to detail was spared from the perfectly fitted gloves, to the supple boots. I can only imagine the effort it took to sculpt these and make them look so realistic and sensual.
I think it’s fair to say I’d do just about anything to have these in my home but for now I will just have to ask for some volunteers to help me recreate them in flesh.
